Working from home
Many of the library's digital resources (ebooks, journals, articles and databases) require you to be connected to the UiT network. If you wish access to these resources from home, you can use one of the following tools.
1. Oria search engine
When you search for articles, ebooks or academic databases using our homepage or uit.oria.no from home, a login form will automatically appear. Use your UiT username and password to gain access:
Note that even if you have a direct link (DOI or other), you will have to search for the resource in Oria.
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
+ no installation + the login form appears automatically |
- everything needs to be looked up in Oria and can therefore not be used with direct links to articles or databases |
2. EZproxy bookmark
The EZproxy bookmark can be added to your browser. The bookmark enables you to access digital resources you find on the internet without having to go via Oria. When you use the bookmark for the first time, you need to log on with your UiT username and password.
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
+ simple installation: only requires a bookmark to be added + can be used with internet searches, academic database searches and direct links |
- the bookmark needs to be clicked on each time you would like to open a resource - no labelling of resources that UiT has access to - needs to be added to each browser you use |

3. Libkey Nomad
Libkey Nomad is a tool that is most suitable if you frequently use specific search sites to find electronic resources. LibKey Nomad is integrated with a range of popular e-book providers and academic databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Wikipedia, Google Scholar, Google Books, Amazon m.m. When you install the LibKey Nomad addon in your browser, accessible resources are clearly labelled and can be accessed by clicking on a button.
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
+ labelling of resources UiT has access to on a range of relevant search sites + easy access with a visible button |
- does not work with direct links to articles - needs to be installed in each browser you use |
4. UiT's VPN
UiT's VPN software (Cisco Secure Client) provides you with the same access to the library's digital resources as if you were connected to UiTs network on campus. In addition, it enables you to use several other UiT applications that require VPN when working from home. Cisco Secure Client is a computer software that needs to be installed on your PC.
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
+ can be used with internet searches, academic database searches and direct links + allows the use of several other UiT applications from home |
- requires installation of computer software - can have a negative impact on your internet connection |

How to access academic databases
To access academic databases outside of UiT's network, we recommend you to look them up in Oria. If you use LibKey Nomad, you may not be required to go via Oria, since it is integrated with several academic databases.
You can search for databases in Oria in the same way you look for books or articles and the same login form will appear, as illustrated above. A useful tip is to save the link to the database from Oria as a bookmark, so you avoid having to look it up in Oria each time!

How to use Google Scholar
A popular site to search for academic literature is Google Scholar. You can set up Google Scholar to get an overview over resources you have access to via UiT. If you have Libkey Nomad, UiT's VPN or the EZproxy bookmark activated, this will be done automatically.
Home delivery of books
If you are a distance student or live far from our libraries, you can also request physical books to be sent to your home address.
